This overhead shot shows a section of California's Highway 108 as it winds up a grade towards 9,623' Sonora Pass. The late afternoon sun cast a golden hue across the landscape, while the surrounding mountains cast their shadow over the canyon. The distant peaks loom in the background.

This view is from a trail high up on the Eastern Sierra. The wide scree slope adds drama in the foreground, while part of the famous Mono Lake is visible in the background. Rocky cliffs towered over the canyon through which I hiked.

As I hiked along through the forest, I passed this creek surrounded by green grasses. A very simple scene, it evokes feelings of peace and calm.

When I see spots like this on my hikes, I often have one of two reactions. Standing water like this can be a haven for mosquitoes, in which case I usually get a quick look, then hurry on by. Other times, like this one, they can be free of bugs, and I usually stop to linger. I found this one to be particularly photogenic, with the still water & the tall peaks in the background.

While on a trail in the eastern Sierra, I passed this waterfall a short distance away. The flow of the water over the rocks was mesmerizing, and I stopped to observe the flow and listen to the soothing sound. To get this shot I zoomed in on the fall to get a more intimate image. Each I see it it takes me back to that moment.

This spot along a hike in the Stanislaus National Forest drew me in, and I stopped to enjoy it. The massive Sequoia tree flanked by smaller trees, made me feel like this was a special place - a place for solace.

Shot from the air in a position impossible to see from the ground, this image shows the colorful terrain of a volcanic region of the high Sierra. The sun was setting & lit up the area with a glow.

While out exploring the forest not far from my home, I came across an overlook. I make some photos, and waited for sunset. I continued shooting, as the light and colors were phenomenal, at least a half hour past sunset. This was a scene to remember!

As the evening light cast a golden hue across the tree tops, I captured this downward view of the forest. With an almost abstract quality, it's a view we don't see from the ground.

Just above tree level, and just as the sun was setting, I was able to capture this stunning vista. The light cast over the trees and distant mountains created an amazing glow.

From above the trees, you can see the highway (closed for the winter), with the evening sun illuminating the hills and a peek at the Sierra crest in the distance.

While on a hike around this lake in Tuolumne County, California in the early evening, I saw the sun poking through the clouds creating a spot of gold on the trees on the far shore. The lake surface was glassy smooth, and there was hardly a sound. It was peaceful and relaxing, a nice finish to my hike.
